Historic Properties
There are over 1,300 properties in the City of Tacoma listed at the local, state and national
levels, either as individually designated properties or within
designated historic districts.
Tacoma Register of Historic Places
The City of Tacoma maintains the Tacoma Register of Historic Places, which includes individually registered City Landmarks in addition to Historic Districts and Conservation Districts. Properties are nominated to the Register by the Landmarks Commission, and designated by City Council resolution. Changes to the exteriors of City Landmark properties must be approved by the Landmarks Commission.
Washington State Heritage Register and the National Register of
Historic Places
The Washington Heritage Register is maintained by the Washington State
Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP). Projects involving SEPA review and state funds must be reviewed for impacts to Washington Heritage Register properties. In addition, Tacoma has numerous examples of properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
