The goal of Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month, taking place each November, is to illustrate the collective talent in our city and get people involved in the arts. The month is not just for artists... it is an opportunity for all community members to be an active part of Tacoma’s cultural life. Tacoma is ripe with activity and offers a multitude of events. There really is something for everyone.

Opportunities

Call for Visual, Performing and Literary Artists for Art Slam

Deadline for projected art: October 25, 2010
Deadline for live performances: October 18, 2010

The Tacoma Arts Commission is seeking South Puget Sound artists to participate in an Art Slam as part of Tacoma’s 9th annual Art at Work month. On November 17, from 7 – 9 pm, visual and performing art submissions will be projected on the big screen of the Rialto Theater, set to a soundtrack of musical accompaniment. Live performances by performing and spoken word artists will be interspersed between segments of the show. The event will be followed by a reception at the Rialto.

Entry is open to current residents of the South Puget Sound region. There is no fee to apply. 

PROJECTED ART
Artists working in a broad spectrum of media including visual art, music, dance, performance, film and literary arts are encouraged to submit work to be projected during the show. Visual artists are asked to submit up to 10 digital images; performing artists, one 2-minute performing arts piece on DVD or CD to be projected on a large screen. Submission deadline for projected art is October 25, 2010.

LIVE PERFORMANCES
Performing artists who are interested in performing live at the Art Slam are asked to submit up to five pieces, each no longer than 3 minutes in length, for consideration. Work can include, but is not limited to spoken word, dance, poetry, acoustic music, and theater. The submitted work must be the pieces that will be performed during the show. Submission deadline for live performances is October 18, 2010.

Art Slam 2010

In celebration of the 9th anniversary of Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month, the Tacoma Arts Commission will host an Art Slam at the Rialto Theater in downtown Tacoma.

What is an Art Slam? In a fast-paced format, a selection of work by local visual and performing artists will be projected on the big screen, set to a soundtrack of musical accompaniment. Live dance, music, and spoken word performances will be interspersed between segments of the show. Artists of all mediums and genres will show their work, ranging from the very accomplished to the up and coming.

The Art Slam is also available for free public viewing on Click! ON Demand’s TacomaArt & Culture channel through December 2010. ON Demand is accessible to anyone who is a Click! Cable TV customer with a digital receiver.
