Calder Circus

In 1927, sculptor Alexander Calder created a miniature circus fashioned from wire, string, rubber, cloth, and other found objects and designed to fit into a suitcases. This short film, "Cirque Calder", celebrates these tiny wire performers, ingeniously articulated to walk tightropes, dance, lift weights and engage in acrobatics in the ring. Run time: 19 minutes. Facets of Meaning: Looking into the Depths of Contemporary Art Jewelry

In considering the works in Ornament as Art and Loud Bones, this half-day program opens with a discussion of the multifaceted role of treasure materials in the Middle Ages. An exploration of how body adornment carries meaning in a multitude of cultures follows, along with an investigation of the psychological underpinnings of the relationship between jewelry and the viewer, wearer, and artist. Finally, the program closes with a discussion of the Drutt Collection and a brief conversation and a book signing with Helen Williams Drutt English in the gallery.  Space is limited.
